CITY HALL
San Francisco’s Beaux-Arts City Hall was fully restored after the 1906 earthquake and retrofitted after the 1989 Lomo Prieta earthquake. It was the scene of the historic Month of Love when the city legalized same-sex marriages in February 2004. “City Hall was teeming with couples,” recalls San Francisco Assemblyman Mark Leno. “There were so many people waiting, I would walk through the lobby of City Hall to get to my office and marry as many couples as I could along the way.” Mark Leno continues to fight for equal rights in Sacramento. Meanwhile, San Francisco celebrates gay unions and domestic partnerships on a regular basis.
CHINATOWN
Settled by the Chinese immigrants who arrived during the Gold Rush to work the railroads, San Francisco’s Chinatown is the closest you get to Hong Kong west of the Wall. Steps away from the Grant Street Gate is the Far East Cafe with gorgeous dark wood private booths and hundred-year-old lanterns and murals. A celebratory feast of Peking Duck served with homemade buns and a fragrant whole lobster sautéed with ginger and scallions symbolizes prosperity for the new couple.
THE EMBARCADERO
The Embarcadero is the boulevard running along the piers from the ballpark to Fisherman’s Wharf. The newly revamped Ferry Building draws locals and tourists alike with a food lover’s dream selection of restaurants and shops, including an organic Farmer’s Market, local cheese producers Cow Girl Creamery and the ever-popular Viet-fusion Slanted Door restaurant. Across the way is the hip Hotel Vitale with its sleek modernist interiors, day spa, yoga room and sunny terraces overlooking the waterfront.
