CHRISTIAN DIOR COUTURE AUTUMN-WINTER 2009-10

MA'AM, YOU FORGOT YOUR SKIRT

In a strange Hitchockian parallel universe, Tippi Hedren's mad little sister, exquisitely accessorized in pillbox hats, full-length leather gloves and lady-like handbags, seems to left the house without a skirt (or a blouse).

The Fall couture collection for Christian Dior captures the sexy underbelly of the 50s, showing off beautiful slips, girdles, brassieres, garters, stockings and corsets, at times in flagrante, other times just peeping through (think Liz Taylor in Cat).

The non-lingerie part of the collection is classic New Look Dior with cinched waist and peplum hips, interpreted with John Galliano's beautiful cutting and draping prowess. The palette of technicolor brights — fuschia, orange, yellow, ruby, chartreuse — is paired with nudes and sheer-blacks, in sumptuous fabrics and embroidered detailing.

Stephen Jones' drop-dead gorgeous hats, with bird's wings, tulle, and veils, set off the impeccable makeup with Dovima-arched brows, pale skin and bright lips. Models teetered down the stairs of the Dior Salon on bra-strap heels, exaggerated pearls and jewels, and little else. BOND

DIOR COUTURE SPRING 09

John Galliano's inspirations for the Spring Dior Couture collection were "Flemish painters and Monsieur Dior." The rich tones and billowing sleeves echoed classic Vermeer, paired with an exaggerated Dior 50s silhouette: cinched waist and crinoline-crisp full skirts. The collection had the typical Galliano Brit-twist: a smidge tongue-in-cheek, a bit over-the-top fancy dress. BOND

Valentino Couture

VALENTINO

The fiasco at the House of Valentino without Il Signore, has been well-documented (see the movie Valentino: The Last Emperor). New designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli have maintained the Valentino allure with the use of bold color and elegant frills for the new collection. BOND

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER

The 40s Hollywood starlet, the flapper girl, the winsome señorita, and that androgynous 80s chick are some of the looks peopling the Gaultier Couture collection. In mainly blacks, whites and beiges, many pieces have innovative, body revealing cutouts and graphic embellishments. BOND
